About the Artwork

The Upstate has a long history of welcoming international visitors, artists and businesses. With over 200 foreign companies investing more money per capita here than in any other region of the country, it’s essential that we have organizations such as Upstate International and fantastic festivals including Artisphere to welcome all cultures to our area.

We chose to base our sculpture on the pineapple, a traditional symbol of hospitality once used by sailors after long voyages. We feel this represents the sentiment portrayed by the Upstate, as all visitors are welcomed into our beautiful and hard-working region.

About the Team

Chandler Creek Elementary is one of the largest elementary schools in Greenville County. We are an International Baccalaureate – Primary Years Programme World School. As of the 2015-2016 year, Chandler Creek also became the largest Title 1 elementary school in Greenville County, serving over 1000 students. The 2016 Michelin InTIREnational Art Contest team was headed by our art department. The teachers are Tara Fennell, who earned a BA at USC and a MAT from Lander, and Greg Patton, who has a BA from Furman University. We chose to work with a theme of pineapples, an international symbol of hospitality.
